A Health Management Approach Based on the Energy Flow of Internal Organs: Understanding the 8-chaegil Theory
The 8-chaegil theory is a system of constitutional medicine that analyzes human health based on the balance and flow of energy among internal organs. Its roots can be traced back to Sasang medicine, developed by Lee Je-Ma in the late Joseon Dynasty. This concept was later expanded into an eight-type framework by Kwon Do-Won. Philosopher Kim Yong-Ok (Do-ol) further studied the theory, and his student, Dr. Joo Seok-Won, a licensed Korean Medicine doctor, applied it clinically, developing it into a structured therapeutic system and popularizing it through books and practice. Today, many other practitioners and researchers continue to explore and apply the 8-chaegil theory.
According to this theory, every individual is born with a unique combination of strengths and weaknesses across internal organs. The body consists of six solid organs—lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, heart, and triple burner—and six hollow organs—stomach, small intestine, large intestine, bladder, and gallbladder. The relative strength or weakness among these determines one’s constitution, classified into eight distinct types.
Each type is characterized by dominant and weaker organs, affecting various physiological features such as sweating, heat distribution, disease patterns, food responses, and drug sensitivity. In this view, constitution refers not to anatomical differences, but to functional and energetic variations that influence bodily tendencies.
The 8-chaegil theory draws on the Five Elements (Wu Xing) philosophy, particularly the principles of mutual generation and control, to explain the directional flow of energy among organs. The human body constantly seeks homeostasis, but never truly achieves it, maintaining a dynamic, unbalanced state that allows energy to circulate. This inherent disequilibrium is the basis for the existence of constitutional types.
Diagnosing a person’s constitution requires expertise, as it involves interpreting complex patterns across symptoms, reactions to medications and foods, and physical tendencies. Based on this, practitioners offer personalized treatments and health guidelines tailored to each constitution.
The 8-chaegil theory represents a unique integration of Eastern philosophical traditions with modern clinical insights, providing a structured, individualized approach to health management.
